Sponge Applications for Sealing

In the field of sealing, various sponge materials are widely applied due to their flexibility, resilience, and environmental resistance, among which EPDM sponge, silicone sponge, and PU foam dominate different scenarios based on their distinct physical and chemical properties.

EPDM sponge is one of the most commonly used sealing materials, especially favored in outdoor and long-term weather-exposed applications. With excellent ozone resistance, UV resistance, waterproof performance, and stable elasticity at medium temperatures, it is extensively used in architectural door and window seals, automotive body and sunroof gaskets, electrical cabinet waterproof gaskets, and HVAC system sealing parts. Its outstanding durability and cost-effectiveness make it the preferred choice for general industrial and outdoor sealing requirements.

Silicone sponge stands out for its ultra-wide temperature resistance and non-toxic, environmentally friendly characteristics, making it irreplaceable in high-temperature and hygienic-sensitive sealing fields. It performs reliably in environments ranging from low temperatures to over 200°C, while maintaining softness and low compression set. Typical applications include high-temperature equipment seals for ovens and sterilizers, food-grade and medical device gaskets, new energy battery thermal insulation and sealing, as well as precision electronic shock absorption and dustproof seals. Although relatively higher in cost, its performance advantages in extreme conditions are unmatched by most rubber sponges.

PU foam (polyurethane sponge) is mainly used in light‑duty, low‑cost sealing and cushioning scenarios. It features good softness, sound absorption, and easy processing, but is limited by relatively poor heat resistance and weather resistance. Therefore, it is commonly applied in household appliance light gaskets, indoor dustproof seals, packaging buffer sealing, and sound insulation linings, rather than in outdoor or high-temperature environments.

In addition, other sponge materials such as NBR sponge and CR neoprene sponge provide targeted solutions for special sealing needs: NBR sponge excels in oil resistance and is used in engine and fuel system seals, while CR sponge offers balanced oil and weather resistance for general industrial and automotive interior gaskets. Collectively, these sponge materials form a complete solution system for sealing, meeting diversified demands in construction, automotive, electronics, food, medical, and new energy industries.
