Silicone rubber has outstanding electrical properties. Its outstanding advantage is that its dielectric strength, power factor and insulation performance are minimally affected by temperature and frequency changes. Over a very wide temperature range, the dielectric strength remains basically constant. Over a wide frequency range, the dielectric constant and the tangent of dielectric loss remain almost unchanged. The corona resistance and electrical resistance of silicone rubber are also excellent. Its corona resistance life is approximately a thousand times that of polytetrafluoroethylene. The arc resistance life is approximately 20 times that of fluorine rubber. Silicone rubber is not easy to burn. Even if it catches fire, the resulting silicon dioxide is insulating
The arc resistance of silicone rubber is much better than that of ordinary rubber. It is generally believed that the reason lies in its lower carbon content than that of common organic rubber. Therefore, the amount of conductive carbon precipitated due to the arc is very small, and it is replaced by silica. The polarity of the side groups in polysilane also affects the phase dielectric constant and volume resistivity
