What is Silicone Rubber Temperature Rating?

Dear valued customers and partners: In our daily technical discussions, we've noticed that many of you are deeply interested in the "temperature ratings" of silicone foam materials, yet still have questions. What exactly does this mean? Why is it so crucial? How can you choose the right grade for your products? As your trusted partner, we aim to help you fully understand the "temperature code" of silicone foam materials through this clear and accessible guide.

  What is a temperature rating?

It is not a single number, but a "safety zone". Simply put, the temperature rating of a silicone foam material refers to the temperature range in which it can work stably for a long time and maintain its key properties (such as elasticity, sealing, insulation).

Keep in mind two key concepts:

Long-term operating temperature range: the temperature range in which the material can work continuously for 7 days and 24 hours without serious performance degradation. This is the core basis for our design and selection.

Short-term peak temperature: The material can withstand extreme heat for brief periods (e.g., several hours or tens of minutes), but it should not be used as a standard operating temperature. For our company's silicone foam material, the typical long-term operating temperature range is-60°C to +200°C. This means it can handle everything from the bitter cold of the Arctic to oven-like heat.

Why is temperature rating critical to your product?

Temperature rating has a significant impact on safety. In high-temperature applications (such as sealing pads for new energy vehicle battery packs and heat insulation covers for industrial equipment), if the material is not heat resistant, it will decompose, powder, or even burn, resulting in sealing failure, short circuit or fire, and safety cannot be guaranteed.

Temperature rating has an important impact on the stability of product performance: ensure that the seal is still tight in the alternation of cold and heat, ensure that the sound insulation cotton does not shrink in the high temperature of the engine compartment, and ensure that the buffer pad does not harden and crack in the low temperature.

Temperature rating can help you extend the life of the product: Using within the rated temperature can greatly delay the thermal aging process of the material, and avoid the premature replacement and maintenance costs caused by performance degradation.

Silicone foam VS other materials: Why is it the best for wide temperature range applications?

Let's make an intuitive comparison:

material

Long-term temperature range (approx.)

Feature Analysis

Silicone foam material

-60°C ~ +200°C

It has a wide range of high and low temperature, excellent flexibility and sealing properties; oil resistance is relatively general

EPDM foam material

-50°C ~ +150°C

Good weather resistance, not heat resistant.

Chloroprene foam

-40°C ~ +100°C

Good flame retardant, narrow temperature range, easy to compress permanent deformation.

Polyurethane foam

-30°C ~ +100°C

Good elasticity, but not resistant to high temperature and humidity, easy to hydrolysis and powder.

Beyond the basics: Four factors affecting actual temperature resistance Temperature rating is a benchmark, but in practical applications, the following factors need to be considered:

Foam structure: Our closed cell foam structure can more effectively block heat transfer and air circulation, so as to improve the insulation and heat resistance effect.

Service life: The material's performance degradation varies when operating at 200°C for 1000 hours versus 5000 hours. We can provide customized solutions based on your service life requirements.

Environmental medium: The material's temperature resistance may be reduced when exposed to engine oil, coolant, or chemicals at high temperatures. Please inform us of your specific operating conditions.

Mechanical stress: The temperature resistance of silicone foam in a state of continuous compression or tension will also be slightly affected.

Practical Guide: How to Choose the Right Material for Your Application?

Household appliances (oven door seal, electric kettle gasket): Choose a long-term temperature resistance rating of 200°C to handle daily dry heat conditions.

New energy vehicles (battery gasket, motor insulation cover): High flame retardant +200°C temperature resistance grade must be selected to ensure absolute safety.

Industrial equipment (pipeline insulation, sealing of thermal instruments): the thermal cycle frequency and medium should be considered to select the best stability formula.

Outdoor communication (sealed cabinet, buffer antenna cover): needs to withstand summer sun and winter cold, the wide temperature range is the key.

Our recommendation: When determining your application scenario, consider not only the "operating temperature", but also the maximum/minimum temperature, duration, contact medium, stress conditions, etc.
