What does UL94 V0 flame retardancy mean? —— More than just 'not igniting'

As an operations specialist at Sanpu Silicone Co., Ltd., I regularly receive inquiries from clients about product flame retardant ratings. The most frequently mentioned and rigorously required standard is 'UL94 V0'. While many recognize this designation as 'flame retardant', its true significance and value extend far beyond these two characters.

Today, we will thoroughly explain what the "UL94 V0" means, which often appears in our test reports and product specifications.

  1. What is UL94? It is not merely a basic "flame-retardant" label.

First, let's understand what' UL 'stands for. UL is the abbreviation for United Laboratory, a globally recognized and highly credible safety certification body. You can think of it as the' international examiner' in the field of material safety.

UL94 is a UL standard specifically designed to test the flame performance of plastic materials, including elastomers such as our foamed silicone. Therefore, when a material claims to have passed UL94 certification, it means it has been proven through a rigorous and scientific testing process.

  2. V0's "Cruel" Test: Vertical Combustion Test

The commonly referred to V0 rating originates from one of the most widely adopted testing methods in the UL94 standard: the vertical burning test.silicone foam

Imagine this test scenario:

Vertical suspension: A standard-sized test strip (e.g., 125mm x 13mm) is vertically mounted within a transparent test chamber. This represents the most demanding combustion scenario, as flames spread upward.

Apply flame: Under the sample strip, direct a standardized Bunsen burner flame (temperature above 500℃) at the bottom edge of the sample strip and burn continuously for 10 seconds.

Remove the flame and start the timer: 10 seconds later, remove the flame and start the stopwatch to record the time of the remaining flame of the sample (that is, the time when the material itself continues to burn).

Secondary Ignition: After the flame on the sample strip has completely extinguished, immediately apply flame again for 10 seconds.

Record again: Remove the flame and record the time of the remaining flame burning and the remaining burning (no flame but red burning).

The test simulated whether the material would self-extinguish after accidental contact with a fire source, thereby preventing the spread of the fire.

  3. V0's "Graduation Criteria": Let the Data Speak

After the brutal "double burning" process, a material must meet all three stringent criteria to achieve the V0 certification.

After any test, the single residual flame burning time should not exceed 10 seconds.

The total remaining flame burning time of the two tests shall not exceed 50 seconds.

After the second flame is removed, the sample cannot be completely burned out.

The sample must not have burning material dripping and igniting the dry de-greased cotton below. (This is the key to preventing ignition of other items!)

After the flame is completely extinguished, the spline cannot continue to burn for more than 30 seconds.

For comparison, V1 class permits a single flame duration of up to 30 seconds with a total duration of 250 seconds; V2 class has similar standards to V1 but allows burning material to drip onto de-greased cotton.

Therefore, V0 is the highest level in the vertical combustion rating. It represents an extreme characteristic of "extinguishing immediately after removal" --not that it cannot be lit, but that it can extinguish itself very quickly after the fire source is removed, maximizing the control of the combustion range and time to win you valuable escape or fire extinguishing time.

 4. Why must your project comply with UL94 V0?HB flame retardant silicone sponge1

When selecting foamed silicone boards, pursuing UL94 V0 certification is not merely about passing the test, but represents the ultimate guarantee of product safety and reliability.

For battery packs/new energy vehicles: V0-grade silicone foam gaskets can effectively prevent the spread of flames during thermal runaway of batteries, which is a "firewall" to protect life and property safety.

For electronic appliances and charging stations: Short circuits in enclosed spaces pose a common risk. V0 materials prevent small internal flames from escalating into full-scale fires.

For construction/transportation: in ships, high-speed rail and public facilities, the flame retardant property of materials is a national standard and a hard requirement for life safety.

5. Commitments of Sanpu

At Sanpu Silicone, we deeply understand that "safety is no trivial matter." Our flame-retardant foam silicone sheets, whether solid or liquid formulations, not only meet the stringent UL94 V0 certification but also leverage the inherent strengths of silicone materials: exceptional temperature resistance (-60°C to 200°C+), superior sealing and cushioning performance, and outstanding weather resistance and chemical stability.

Choosing a material with genuine UL94 V0 certification isn't about cost-it's an investment in future risks.

We hope this science article helps you better understand this key metric. If you have a specific project in the selection process, feel free to contact our technical team at any time. We will provide you with the most professional solutions.
